Lyons Carnival Club 2008 Mardi Gras Day March

Another perfect weather day this year as The Lyons Carnival Club descended upon uptown for the 7:00am start of the Parade at Grits Bar... The Parade went fairly flawless, as usual Zulu had there annual break downs, stranding us at St. Charles and Jackson for about an hour and a half... but in the end we all made it to Molly's on the Market...

The Rolling Elvi Muses Ball and Muses Parade Ride...

The Muses Parade was initially scheduled to ride on Thursday, the 31st... The threat of intense thunderstorms and tornadoes led to its postponement until Friday the 1st... The Ball was still held as scheduled the night of the 31st and I must say was a thousand times more fun since we weren't all exhausted from the ride in the Parade... Friday night we rode... We had some initial technical problems with the new band wagon, but DC from a Clockwork Elvis made his debut sing Elvis Tunes as we rode... As usual, we had about 10-15 Strolling Elvi, due to flats, broken starters, and assorted other mishaps, but no major crashes... Also a shout to rookie Elvi Mike Mills, came in, rode, and had a blast... can't wait to see ya again at future events...

Lyons Carnival Club Practice March - 01-27-08

For everybody who's in town for Mardi Gras, come on out to one of the stops this sunday to watch all of us drunken fools march the Lyons Carnival Club Practice March on Sunday, Jan. 27th... We start around 2:00 at Grits Bar and follow the route below stopping for cocktails at the marked stops and finish up back at Grits 3 or 4 hours later. This Year we have the Soul Rebels providing the music so we'll be really taking it to the streets... Also as we did last year, The Pussyfooters will be joing the march starting at the Kingpin...
So come one and all to see what crazy costume ideas the boys have thought up, listen to the Soul Rebels, and get some throws while enjoying the show... hope to see everybody out there!!!

Okkie Dokie my NOLAmiterros... Mardi Gras is upon us once again, with Krewe de Vieux kicking off the parading season this Saturday the 19th... So I'll will do my best to keep updates coming... So stay tuned... cause you know how NOLAmite rolls, we'll have The Rolling Elvi all up through this beotch, Lyon Carnival Club kickin it old school, Crawfish boils, beer swilling, bead throwing and catching, and all other forms of debauchery one can think of...

So anyway sorry for the limited updates lately... I've been teaching a protege the wonders of 70's arena rock on a keyboard... You cannot watch this video without think dear god that 10 year old is friggin Awesome!!!!

Rolling Elvi Innaugrial Bus Blowout

The Krewe (minus all the Earls), including several Priscillae, rented a party bus the other night for the first of hopefully many Bus Bar Crawls through NOLA. Starting at the Kingpin the trip took us to 45 Tchoup, The Bridge Loung, Lucy's, The Saturn Bar and ended at the High Ho Lounge to see the Clockwork Elvis accompanying a burlesque show...
Man was that a good time...

I'm am still buzzing from this game... I was the only ASU fan (alumnus '96) at Cooter Browns during the game and by the end when we blocked the kick and won the game, I was living like a rockstar...

In the end I think the best part of it all is this: for the past 16 years when people asked me who my favorite College Football team was, the response was generally who the hell is Appalachian State?... even after we won the past two I-AA championships the past two years, still no recognition... But those days are officially over...

We will now always be the Giant Slayers from Boone, NC... The second favorite team of every fan from 9 schools in the Big 10...

Two Years Later...

Well its been offically 2 years now since Katrina... and I thought it would be a good time to reflect and remember all those people and places lost, as well as, the incredible outreach and help from average people around the country and the world that went out of there way to help and rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast...

I thought I'd attach the first email I could send out after the storm to all my peeps, reading it again I can totally remember exactly how I was feeling right after the madness began... I'm glad the swath of uncertainty has narrowed for the majority of us, but there is still lots of work to do... Finally I just want to thank everyone who has helped not just my family and friends but everyone who has contribute to the slow proccess of rebuilding and giving hope to this awesome corner of the world, We couldn't have done it without you... but thats not to say we are out of the woods my any means, there is still lots to do... But NO and the Gulf Coast are a resilient bunch, and we shall be back and better than before...

Hey everybody... I finally got a chance to get online to let everybody know that we got out and are safe...

we got out of NOLA about 3:00am Saturday night, we had no money and my brakes were out, but we borrowed some money, and rolled the dice... We hope you never have to walk though you're house and have to decide what you want and what you can't take... boy does that blow... anyway, we're over at my grandma's place in Panama City, Fl, the dogs have a huge fenced in yard with their own a/c room, so they're pretty happy...We're still really worried about all of our friends who decided to ride it out for some stupid reason... to add insult to injury, I have a pretty serious viral infection in my left eye... but I have some really nice doctors helping me out down here... my company is going to relocate the nola office, so I'll still have a job, if I want to keep it I guess... we're gonna start heading up to NC soon by way of eastman, ga, to stay with Kayla's mom for a little while... so we'll be in touch when we can... 504 area code phones are worthless when it comes to incoming calls... and my online access is spotty... so please let everybody know that were ok... and I'll be in touch when I can...

"the great swath of uncertainty"- on our way out of New Orleans, one of the radio guys in Mississippi, was calling that cone of predicability for the hurricane the "swath of uncertainty"... and we've decided that is a very fitting description for all us wayward refuges... keep all of us, especially our friends who didn't make it out, in your thoughts... also if you can spare a little change try to donate some money to the red cross or somebody that can help... and hopefully we'll all make out through the great swath of uncertainty together...

Last Friday the 24th the Rolling Elvi were invited to participate at a show at Carrollton Station to raise money and awareness for the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund (NOMRF)... also in attendance was Special Guest Mike Mills from REM who have been very active in supprting the NOMRF cause...

here as excerpt from there site to give you an idea of there cause...

The New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund, Inc., a grass roots certified 501c(3) founded by and for displaced musicians, has sent grants to hundreds of displaced New Orleans musicians, thanks to caring individuals around the world.

Friends of New Orleans music REM just collaborated with Entertainment Weekly, NOMRF and Mercy Corps on the video below featuring a photo of our founder's family piano (Order Prints on our Donations Page), and Mike Mills came to the NOMRF Download Celebration at Carrolton Station, along with Rolling Elvi who rode in to support the music. Susan Cowsill, Johnny Sansone, Jimmy Robinson, Spencer Bohren, Rickie Castrillo, Alfred "Uganda" Roberts, Beatin Path, We Are the Pretenders, Joe Topping, Craig Klein, The Rev. Goat Carson and John Rankin, rocked the house with many of their download tunes.

History of the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund

Our funds come straight from music lovers, and they go to individual musicians. NOmrf was founded by Jeff and Karen Beninato - Jeff grew up in the 9th Ward and played bass on Bourbon Street. He went on to perform with alternative band the dB's before becoming a producer, working recently with Twangorama. Four months after the levees failed, the NOmrf founders settled in the midwest.

Message From the Founder

If you think this tragedy is over think again. There are still families out there in corners of this country trying to figure out what they are going to do to get their lives back to some normalcy. There are so many musicians who were well known in New Orleans that are totally unknown where they are now. Imagine building your fanbase or your work base in your workplace and suddenly it all disappears.

So if whomever clicks can help in just a small way, every .99 Download is more help we can give to a musician and his or her family. And that would be a beautiful thing.
